SSDS's approach to organizational development enables organizations to fulfill their mission and enhance financial, political, and managerial sustainability. SSDS interventions build sustainable capacity by providing the information, training, systems and practical experience that enables organizations to incorporate relevant knowledge and skills into their own organizational toolkit. The SSDS approach is holistic and multi-disciplinary, since organizations are systems in which all the parts interact. SSDS practitioners use participatory assessments, training and mentoring to involve stakeholders in a learning-by-doing process so that technical assistance creates enduring, positive improvements. An important SSDS principle is to operate behind-the-scenes, so that the local organization - and not SSDS - gains increased visibility and legitimacy with both its funding and product/service delivery clients.
SSDS organizational development assistance has helped private organizations and public agencies respond to a complex array of common challenges, such as changes in political and funding environments, capacity gaps in specific management areas, strains caused by growth or expansion, or lack of clarity in vision and goals.
